Paledi Segapo To Be Honoured At Men’s Fashion Week Nigeria

Paledi Segapo, Founder and Creative Director of fashion power house ‘Palse’, is set to be honoured at this year’s Men’s Fashion Week Nigeria MAN Awards, receiving the night’s highest honour the “Special Fashion Achievement Award”. The MAN Awards recognize the outstanding work of gentlemen that have distinguished themselves through artistic and organizational impetus and shaping Africa’s fashion industry.  

Commenting on his award Segapo says – “When I received a call from MFWN organisers I was left completely blown away on finding out I’ll be presented with their highest honour of the night. It honestly leaves me feeling ecstatic and very grateful that my work is acknowledged not only in South Africa but also in the continent.”

Not only being honored Segapo will also be showcasing for the second time at MFWN, but is no stranger to the Nigerian market having showcased at numerous other events before.   

The renowned designer will be showcasing his new collection themed “I am An African” which he recently showcased in London in August this year, inspired by the 1996 speech of former South African President Thabo Mbeki.

With 2017 having already been a magnificent year for the designer, he is also due to showcase his new winter collection at SA Fashion Week 2017 in October, Windhoek Fashion Week in November and lastly Swahili Fashion Week (Tanzania) in December.

Highlighting his best experiences over the years – “Being part of the face that’s changing the local fashion landscape, having established the Business Management of Fashion Seminar and most importantly working with my award winning brand ambassador – Donald. No one can ever imagine the magnitude of experience I’ve acquired that continues to make strive be the best creative yet.”

Undoubtedly one of the most respected designers in SA and Africa as a whole, Segapo has much to say about the local fashion industry.  

“The fashion industry is very precarious and ephemeral. In SA our industry is unlike the European and American brands which have enormous investment muscle behind them or under holding companies, e.g Loius Vuitton, Dior are under the LVMH group. Our brands are run and owned solely by the designers. As you can imagine, cash flow is the determining factor to stay afloat. Taking into cognisance we don’t showcase for free at fashion week events, there’s a huge cost factor involved. In short, it’s survival of the fittest.”

“My advice for upcoming designers – Don’t be in a hurry to start your own fashion label. Intern, learn from the best positioned in the game. Overnight sensations yield short term results,” he continues.

Segapo currently headlines the CAT Footwear national campaign and is a weekly fashion columnist for the Sunday Sun newspaper.


CAREFREE By Red & Kalai – FILM-ED Cinema | REconnecteD TV

REconnecteD TV takes the next step in their quest to bring the world as much great content on African fashion as possible with the launch of the FILM-ED Cinema.

This is a section of their YouTube channel just for fashion films – of all kinds- from all across Africa. The playlist is open to submissions for filmmakers who has something they believe more people deserve to see. The film itself must be 100% created by creatives living and working on the African continent.

The first film recently launched with a short performance art fashion film titled “Carefree”. This short film examines the daily fear womxn face when entering unguarded spaces alone, even in daylight. Sexual violence has come to the forefront of millennial popular debates. Experiencing harassment in some way or the other is a daily occurrence amongst many of the struggles young womxn are burdened with today. Red & Kalai teamed up to conceptualise a film to bring attention to the volatile environment in which the sexual harassment of women occurs due to their clothing choices.


Aspiring designers face off in the “Intern by David Tlale” reality show With David Tlale

The Intern by David Tlale is a 13-episode reality TV show shot in Maboneng Precinct, Johannesburg which follows 12 contestants on their journey to becoming David Tlale’s next intern. The first episode of the Intern by David Tlale will air on the 4th of July 2017 on SABC 3.

The Intern by David Tlale is a new reality show about the South African fashion industry that is committed to the development and support of the country’s budding talent and this platform gives them an opportunity to hone their skills and puts South Arica on the fashion landscape. It gives the youth an opportunity to gain first-hand experience in working with celebrated designers, stylists, photographers, models and learning the ropes of the real world of fashion.

I have great respect for every contestant who took part in this first season because they all come from different backgrounds and some with no specialist fashion training and so I know it has been challenging for them, especially to do this in front of the camera”, says Tlale.

Throughout the show the audience gets to witness 12 shortlisted contestants from across South Africa via online applications as they battle it out for the chance to win a full year mentorship with world renowned designer David Tlale. On each episode, contestants are given a fashion design project and are judged on their work. One or two participants are then eliminated each week.

The mentorship includes specialised training and development by industry experts, exposure to all facets of the David Tlale brand and business including: design, fabric sourcing, range development and production, quality control, marketing and retail, media training, basic business management skills.

The grand finale will be aired live from Nelson Mandela bridge in October 2017 where one or two winners will be announced.

Nigerian Shoe Brand Keexs, collaborates with South African Designer for SA Fashion Week

Nigerian brand, Keexs (The first innovative and social Footwear brand in Africa) and South African based Afrikanswiss (Africa’s premier denim brand) recently collaborated on a new collection for South African Fashion Week 2017. The recent xenophobic attacks on foreigners, especially Nigerians living in South Africa did not deter these brands from working together to promote unity in the African fashion industry.

Showcased at the Hyde Park corner in Johannesburg on the 31st of March; the new Spring/Summer 2017 collection, “Naija man in Soweto” tells the story of a modern merge of cultures, with interesting pieces like the denim ‘fila’ to the denim embroidered ‘buba’, it’s safe to say that there’s no limit to the creativity of African fashion designers.

The Keexs sneaker collection with art curated by self-taught artist Lemi Ghariokwu, draws inspiration and pays tribute to the legendary Fela Anikulapo – Kuti, a Nigerian multi-instrumentalist, musician, composer, pioneer of the Afrobeat music genre, human rights activist and political maverick who has inspired millions of people all over the world.

The Afrikanswiss collection fused Nigerian traditional wear with pantsula street wear. Pantsula, a highly energetic dance originated in the black townships of South Africa during the Apartheid era. It developed into a form of social commentary for black South Africans and although it has undergone several transformations with the country’s changing political tides it still stays relevant till today.

Nigeria and South Africa could be likened to the Biblical Aaron and Moses, endowed with the responsibility of bringing Africa out from the bondage of despair, decline and underdevelopment. As regional powers, history has imposed on them the enormous task of finding solutions to some of the most pressing African concerns.

The Keexs and Afrikanswiss collection will be available in select retail stores in Nigeria and South Africa by Spring 2017
