Profile Feature | Miss Soweto 2015 : Buhle Xulu

At the end of last year, 20-year-old BComm student Buhle Xulu was crowned as Miss Soweto at the glittering gala final, sponsored by White Star Super Maize Meal.

Xulu says that she has always wanted to be a beauty queen. “There’s a quote that says ‘be the type of woman you promised yourself you’d be as a little girl’, this sums up my dream and how I’m living up to it with my Miss Soweto title.”

She is inspired by previous Miss Soweto winner Basetsana Khumalo and shares, “I aspire to be the woman she is. She has made a great success of herself beyond her pageant titles.”

Xulu also looks up to Khanyi Dhlomo, who according to the newly named pride of Soweto, is not just beautiful, but also has brains. “She believes in education, as do I.” In line with this statement, Xulu would like to make Soweto and the world a better place by making sure that every child gets access to quality education and emphasising the importance of literacy and reading.

In addition, she would like to change the mentality amongst females of being intimidated by other women’s looks, saying that they shouldn’t look down on themselves. As a role model, her advice to young women is to believe that they are worthy and to always stand up for themselves because they don’t need any kind of validation from anyone.

Xulu lost her mother at a young age, as a result, today her most treasured possession is a photograph of her late parent.

The self-described ‘daddy’s girl’ says that she is a hardworking, ambitious and social young woman who believes in respect. “I appreciate people who are honest and real.” She is also constantly trying to improve herself and states, “I’m not afraid to fail and I try to utilise my opportunities to the maximum.”

This go-getter relaxes by reading, hanging out with friends and going through fashion blogs to see what latest trends are. She also loves doing retail therapy every now and again.

Proud Moments | My Very First Matric Dance Initiative

Pictured above is 18 year old Nokubonga with her mother, a matric student of Senzokwethu High School situated in Ntuzuma. I was introduced to Nokubonga by a very good friend of mine, Lungile. Lungile and I also matriculated at Senzokwethu. Knowing how young girls during my matric year would stress around the time for the Matric Dance. Remembering how they would all want to go and be part of the special and memorable evening but some couldn’t because of financial issues. Those thoughts gave me an idea, as a fairly influential blogger, I thought of using my connections to help a hand in need. So I spoke to a few people around me about the idea and they all thought it was incredible. I now had the idea, I just had to put one and two together and make it all happen. Lungile helped me find a girl who needed help with her matric dance and that’s how I found Nokulunga. I was in contact with her mother and asked if they could pay the fees to go and I would organise everything else. Nokubonga and her mother were thrilled to hear that I could help and I was even more thrilled that they appreciated my help.

Most of the stuff was sponsored and some I tried getting sponsorship for but failed, so I had to pay for them. I can’t express how thankful I am to all the brands that came on board and assisted me in making sure that Nokulunga feels Royal on her big night. I really appreciate it and I know that Nokubonga appreciates it more.

I am proud of myself for being able to put something like this together and I am grateful to have big brands believe in me. It means so much and I definitely will be doing similar initiatives in the future.
