Things Moving Out Of Home Has Taught Me

Most of my friends know how much I have been wanting to move out of home for YEARS – but I guess I’ve just been too scared to finally face adulthood. I feared staying without my mom, my siblings and basically being at home. Of course there were times when I would want to be on my own, and times when our fights with my siblings would be too heated – whenever I thought of moving out, I would get this fear that I never thought I would overcome. I turned 24 in January, this was the perfect time to find my own space… though it wasn’t easy to do, I knew I didn’t want to turn 25 living under my mom’s roof. On the 6th of June I made the greatest decision of my life, I packed my bags and moved to my own place.

This blog post is about the lessons I have learned since I moved out of my mom’s home.

Food is expensive

I remember back at home my mom would always say this but I would just ignore her, I would have friends come over on weekends and we’d eat, and eat and eat. Now that I am living on my own and I have to buy my own groceries, I always think twice before inviting a friend over, this may sound funny but DAMN food is expensive and doing groceries is not one of the enjoyable things to do – it is TERRIBLE.

Not everyone is happy to see you grow

I have people checking on me and asking ‘don’t you miss home?’ – of course I miss home, but that’s none of your business. I actually have some ‘friends’ who would comment about how I won’t manage even six months because I can’t do anything, those same people talking are the same ones who still ask their parents for cosmetics cash etc (mind you, most of them are my age and some are actually older). Even if I don’t make it to 6 months staying on my own, what is it to you? At least I had the courage of doing what you are not willing to do.

Nothing is for MAHHALA

Now that I am living on my own you are aware that I have to pay rent and buy groceries right? Well, those are not the only things that one needs to start budgeting for when they’ve moved out of home, if you’re a lazy somebody like me, and can’t afford a washing machine just yet, you gotta find yourself a laundry lady – this I realised this other morning when I saw that I’ve ran out of clothes and learned that I can’t do my own laundry. I had to find an affordable & reliable lady to do my laundry monthly, and of course, that’s more money out of my pocket.

I hope this blog posts did not make any of you who are planning to move out of home change your minds. My next blog post will be on the good and fabulous things of owning your space.

WIN Wakaberry Vouchers

My Facebook page page reached 4k likes last week. The support all of you have been giving me is amazing and it is greatly appreciated. As I was thinking of a competition to run on this blog to say ‘thank you’ – my friends at Wakaberry contacted me letting me know about their new app which launched today. I love Wakaberry FROYO and I know that most of you guys do too. I managed to organise Wakaberry vouchers for you to WIN. Below I have included a list of things that you guys need to do in order for your entries to be considered.

The winners will be announced on Friday via my Facebook page

Below I have included a press release which has everything that you all need to know about the new awesome #WakaApp

Wakaberry launches WakaApp – the first frozen yoghurt app of its kind in South Africa.

The app is free to download and is available globally for Apple and Android as well as feature phones (via the mobi site app.wakaberry.co.za). Wakafans who download the app in June 2015 and complete their profiles, will receive a digital R30 froyo voucher to redeem at any participating Wakaberry store.  From there they will be able to collect virtual stamps for each purchase and after their 19th stamp they will be entitled to a R30 voucher – essentially a free bowl, a perfect reward for a true Wakafan.

The app will launch with added features like a store list and customer feedback option as well as being fully integrated with social media.  Future developments include a daily flavours section as well as the opportunity to purchase and send virtual gift vouchers (for that perfect last minute gift idea).

“Our Wakafans have helped us to grow into the biggest froyo brand in the country.  We are looking forward to saying thank you and engaging with our tech savvy fans in a whole new way,” says Luise Peters, Brand Manager. “We are also very proud of our previous froyo innovations and we are always looking for ways to continue to grow the froyo culture.  This app is the natural next step in that growth,” she adds.

The WakaApp is now available for download. Customers can also SMS “Wakaberry” to 33872 to be sent the download link. The current paper reward system will continue to be accepted in stores and will be discontinued over time.

For more information, the T&Cs and a participating store list please visit www.wakaberry.co.za.
