#MyRadioPeople : Durban Youth Radio’s Njinga Mpanza

An Events Doctor, Club DJ and Fashionista, Njinga Mpanza of Durban Youth Radio is the personality I chose to feature on #MyRadioPeople this week.

Why radio? Honestly, radio was never really a part of my plan but over the years, people kept telling me I have a voice for radio. I figured let me give radio a shot.
Which other radio stations have you worked at? Actually, I haven’t worked for any other radio station beside DYR and I’ve been with DYR for just over a year now.
Did you study radio? Not at all. I studied Advertising Management at Varsity College. I learn more about radio from the guys that have been in the industry for years.
Besides Radio, which other side projects are you currently busy with or are involved in? Geez, so many. I’m a DJ for clubs /events/functions eg. Origin, Bus Stop, Tiger Tiger, 21st birthdays etc.. I’m also an MC (Host) for events/functions and also works as an events organizer sometimes. I pretty much get involved in as much as I can. But only projects that support social cohesion & unity because that’s what I stand for.
Who is your South African Radio Icon? I would say T-Bo Touch. Besides the American accent, I’m fascinated by how much influence he has. That’s the kind of “power” I also want.
What can we expect from you in the next 5 years? I would like to have created a network of influencers in the creative industry to create a platform for the youth to be able to earn a decent living whilst being a creative. An opportunity we (current creatives) do not have so easily.
How often do you listen to other radio stations and which radio stations do you usually listen to? Since I’m a baby in the world of broadcasting, I spend a lot of time listening to the guys who have been at it for years.
How often do you listen to other radio stations and which radio stations do you usually listen to?
Metro, Gagasi, 5FM & ECR.
What has working on radio taught you? The biggest lesson I’ve learned is to “speak more, talk less” – I apply this lesson to my everyday life.
What advice can you give to aspiring radio broadcasters?

  1. Have a great attitude
  2. Have a student mentality
  3. Be a problem solver
  4. Work hard

Thanks so much for reading, hope to see you again :)
