#MyRadioPeople : Jacaranda FM’s Thabiso ‘Mack’ Rapapali

This week I have another talented personality, Thabiso Rapapali who’s popularly known as ‘Mack’. As described on the Jacaranda FM website, Mack studied at Welkom Gymnasium and has been an artist, MC, voice over artist, radio presenter and was a key player in the Cape Town entertainment and clubbing scene, having DJ’ed and MC’ed at many major events and parties.

Why radio? In the great words of JayZ , ” I didn’t choose this life this life chose me”. Entertainment in general has been part of me from birth. Back in the days, radio was my only media platform. Coming from a struggle, TV was never part of our lives until a certain age in life. In a nutshell , being a radio personality was always my dream!

Which other radio stations have you worked at? Gold FM, The Rock & now my dream station Jacaranda Fm.

Did you study radio? This journey started in Cape Town studying my law. Went for a few training sessions at Heart, Good hope & when I dropped out because of funds – I went back home and started following the training through OFM and then moved into the stations mentioned above. Radio these days is about following. I believe in pure talent, not celebrity radio!

Besides Radio, which other side projects are you currently busy with or are involved in? Well, I’ve got my own craft beer brand in which I’m launching on the on the 7th of April at Loftus stadium, I’m also a Vodacom Bulls ambassador/MC & PA announcer, TV Generations The Legacy Doctor Dube, event organizer & a DJ.

Who is your South African Radio Icon? When you speak of controversy you speak of Rian van Heerden, story telling it has to be Thuso Motaung. Now this is radio at it’s best!

What can we expect from you in the next 5 years? I don’t set a timeline or deadline for myself. I go with the flow & live in the moment. I believe that if I fail I’ve got myself to blame and no one else. So I don’t believe in 5 year goals. I live in the now world & move to the one!

How often do you listen to other radio stations and which radio stations do you usually listen to? I’m loyal to JacarandaFm. But at times I play open platforms to other stations especially being into events. One has to because of the variety of music and keeping in the know of what people like.

What has working on radio taught you? Humble yourself child, you will go far. Radio speaks to emotions, it’s not a platform to brag, it’s a platform where ears and peoples opinions matter most. Listening is a skill & delivery is a bandwagon. You have to know, be informed & speak for those who’s voices cannot be heard. It taught me to understanding!

What advice can you give to aspiring radio broadcasters? Keep on keeping on. I’m here to leave a dent, if not, then what am I doing here! This is a dream to many but was meant to be given to a few. live the dream don’t just dream it! In the great words of my mentor Tumelo Diaho-Monaheng.

“Never waste a link”!

Thanks so much for reading, hope to see you again :)
