#MyRadioPeople : Munghana Lonene FM’s Xolani Wale Kenhuk

The multi-talented Xolani Wale Kenhuk is featured this week on #MyRadiopeople series. I was first introduced to him 6 years ago through his celebrity gossip and entertainment news channel on YouTube, XtraLargeTV. Xolani is the traffic reporter and producer of 326Thwii on Munghana Lonene FM.

Why radio?

Well growing up the dream was to conquer all radio, television and print, and after trying out all three I realized that I’m more comfortable with the idea of theatre of the mind and the freedom that comes with the flexibility on radio seemed more speaking to me that being in front of a camera, and I have a the face for it hahah.

Which other radio stations have you worked at?

I’ve had the honor of working with for LoveLife as Senior Radio producer so that meant working closely with almost all the drive time shows on all SABC PBS platforms such as Ukhozi FM, Umhlobo Wenene FM, Lesedi FM, Motsweding FM, Thobela FM, Phalaphala FM, Ikwekwezi FM just to name a few, I’ve produced on MoFlava’s Yfm evening show before he joined MetroFM, Urban Xpress, on a segment called back chat.

Did you study radio?

I had my first radio gig at the age of 14 at a community radio station when I was in grade 10. It was a four hour afternoon drive show that started at 2pm till 6pm. It was only after that that I received formal training for the medium with The Media Training Centre for health in Cape Town and further more went on to train with The Institute for Advanced Journalism. That’s just about it. Everything else I learned along the way

Besides Radio, which other side projects are you currently busy with or are involved in?

Radio is my life, I have a consultancy agency that surprise surprise, does media buying and production for clients that want more radio exposure and presence, I also do social media management for well known car dealerships and shopping centers. I’m hoping to study law in the near future but we’ll see. If the time allows will squeeze it in next year.

Who is your South African Radio Icon?

Whooaaa! Phat Joe comes to mind, Bring back Nicole Fox any day then it’s a pareeeeeeee. Was a die hard Mark Gilman fan back in the day. I’m loving Thando Thabethe at the moment and I also used to love Rude Boy Paul and Unathi on the azanian pulse back in the days of YFM. I have a soft spot for Anele Mdoda, I think DJ SABBY is future of SA radio. And the world must watch out for Dineo Ranaka. Somizi paired with DJ Fresh and Mpho Maboi is growing on me, add my all time faves Vusi Letsoalo, Penny Lebyane and I’m  my dinner table will be filled with lots of laughter. Oh and your dirty uncle Roger for Good measure

What can we expect from you in the next 5 years?

I want a daily late night television show so bad, I know when the time is right that will happen. My own daytime show on Metro/5fm Is also not a bad idea. I hope my age still allows.

How often do you listen to other radio stations?

I’m a die hard Fiver. 5fm in my car, 5fm in the house. This has been for almost 20 years and I’m only 31 so you can imagine the level of my obsession with the brand. Universe are you out there listening?

What has working on radio taught you?

Radio teaches you to think on your feet. I’ve become accustomed to handling pressure with ease. I find that my problem solving has improved over the years and I’m not one to panic.

What advice can you give to aspiring radio broadcasters?

Do it for the right reasons because if you doing it for any other reason it will show, genuine radio listeners know what’s real and what’s not.
